Manage Your Energy, Not Your Calendar!

The secret to getting things done efficiently isn’t time management.

Your performance, health, and happiness are grounded in how well you manage your energy – not your calendar! No matter how strategic a time manager you are, without knowing how to use your energy, you still will feel drained, disconnected, and discouraged.

The Science of Energy Management

Over the two years, I’ve dived deep into studying the science of energy management and how these groundbreaking skills can change how you work and live – leading to higher levels of achievement and renewal! I’ve learned that your performance, health, and happiness are grounded in the skillful management of energy. Since your energy is your most precious resource, it MUST be renewed in order to stay fully engaged.

Energy management experts, Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, define full engagement as having high positive energy so you feel:

  • Invigorated
  • Confident
  • Challenged
  • Joyful
  • Connected

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to to feel more energized and focused by the end of 2014?

With this goal in mind, in my new four Leading Insights™ I’ll be highlighting key energy management strategies to enhance your physical energy, emotional connection, mental focus, and spiritual alignment.

In this Leading Insights™ series on energy management you will learn:
  • Why managing your energy is more effective than managing your time
  • What “Energy Suckers” to avoid each day to stay energized
  • How to structure your day to maximize your impact
  • Core principles for getting in touch with your emotions
  • Tips and tricks to enhance your focus, connection, and performance

My overall goal is to help you learn how to expand your energy capacity so you can manage your life more intentionally.

So until our next installment, I invite you to consider the following energy inquiry and personal challenge.

Energy Inquiry

When you are the most energized and alive…

  • large_jen_mccabe_skydive_oregon_01What are you doing?
  • Where are you?
  • Who are you with?
  • Who’s absent?
  • What time of day is it?

Personal Challenge

Ready Set GoOver the next week, intentionally track your energy throughout each day so you can see the trends that contribute to feeling alive and feeling drained. I suggest using a white board, blank document or note, or simply a piece of paper to record how you’re feeling at 9:00am, 12:00pm, 6:00pm, and 9:00pm each day. Rank your level of energy from 1-10 and make notes on what you’re doing at each time and who’s around. You may be surprised at the patterns that emerge!

Create a great day,

My Challenge For You (Ice Bucket Not Required)

imagesBy now, I’m sure your Facebook needs feed is full of videos of friends and family participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. And if you haven’t seen it yet, this creative marketing campaign involves taking normal household items (bucket, water, ice) and filming the less-than-comfortable act of dumping the ice water on your head, then nominating others to take on the same challenge.

These viral videos have become so popular that the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness for ALS and over $100 million to support the cause, along with a lot of curiosity and some criticism. Whatever your opinion of the Ice Bucket Challenge is, one thing is certain:

People respond when the social pressure is on!

In fact, to test this e-peer-pressure phenomenon, I purposefully did not post my own video, even after being nominated. Now, this wasn’t because of a lack of support for ALS or the campaign in general. Rather, it was to see what happened.

Did anyone even notice or comment?

How did I feel about my own silence?

What is the true challenge here?

intentions_72While the cause is positive, we need to examine what motivates our actions, and inactions, from a place that honors our values. Instead of simply following the crowd or responding because you’re nominated, let’s consider a different challenge:

Choose to live and lead with intention each day.

This is my Wholehearted Leadership™ Challenge to you (no ice buckets involved!). Instead of reacting or being driven to exhaustion by overwhelm, take a moment to choose how you want to show up and what impact you want to have. Then go live and lead this way. Simple. Or is it?

Consider what gets in your way from make intentional choices that are driven from your values.

Not enough time?

Too many demands and deadlines?

Whatever isn’t working, take a moment to call it out and change this now.
