Launching Forward: Incubation + Intentional Action

Seasons Cycle 2In business (and life), we encounter certain seasons. Some are filled with momentous growth and others are marked by creative hibernation. And I’ve been doing a lot of both recently!

Over the last year as I was growing a tiny human and entering my season of new motherhood, I was also incubating so many ideas and possibilities for what Lead With Intention could become.

I began to slow down enough (again) to really listen to what my work needed from me now and who I felt called to serve.

I partnered with my own amazing coach + thought partner and gave my business the attention it deserved.

I reconnected with my core values and got re-energized by my natural strengths, as I teach so many clients to do.

I got super clear on what I loved about my work, what I could let go of, and what I desired to create moving forward.

And from this more grounded, focused place, something amazing happened.

I transformed.

Not overnight. Not even in a month. But over time, I transformed.

IMG_6300Once I gave myself permission to let go of the extra “stuff” that had been taking so much time and energy away from my more important calling, something shifted inside me. With a new vitality, I began to view my work as an invitation to design customized leadership solutions for my tribe to help support their continued influence and success.

Work didn’t feel like work. It felt more like receiving the perfect gift or having an engaging conversation with a good friend. This came from shifting what I was doing and how I was approaching my work.

A Fresh Look + Intentional Pause

I’m excited to unveil all that has been brewing behind-the-scenes, but first, it’s time to take my own advice: I’ll be hitting “pause” on new blogs and newsletters for the immediate future so I can turn my energy and attention to this big transformation.

Your Personal Transformation

For me, 2015 was all about GROWTH.

We moved into a new home.

I became a mother as we welcomed our first child.

My business shifted to serve a more focused clientele.

We hosted over 100 travelers from around the world at our McKinley Chateau.

And so, so much more…

2015Over the last year, I experienced many new things that stretched me emotionally, physically, and spiritually. And through it all, I often felt like I was trying to take on the world and keep it all in balance while my life constantly changed around me.

In this space of life-evolution and self-discovery, I was often humbled by practicing the very principles I offer to you and my clients. I became a beginner (again) and learned how to rest in the grace of the moment and push beyond the unknown (even when this looked messy most of the time!).

Experiencing all of this transition came with a high price…and it was priceless.

Ending the year, I decided to release a lot of the low-level anxiety, over-commitments, and pressure that came with the territory of an ever-evolving life (and if you’re craving some release, you can read more about how to do this!).

Entering 2016, I resolved to off-load what wasn’t serving me and my family and carefully examine any new opportunities through the lens of what I wanted my life to look and feel like. I began considering what specific intentions I needed to set in order to actualize this, instead of it just being a nice idea or fleeting resolution.

When I dug deep and really considered what I was craving most in the coming year, it was a single-focused state of deep motivation, passion, and creation.

Instead of splitting my attention and feeling so scattered, I desired a more powerful (and challenging) intention:

While dates and year-markers are arbitrary, I’m more interested in the growth and change your life has welcomed in 2015 and is yet to experience in 2016.

Every day, we experience ordinary moments of completion, whether we recognize it or not.  We also have extraordinary moments of completion occur throughout our lives. Whatever the scale of event, we have the choice in how intentional we are as we complete an experience.

I encourage you to take the time to really connect with each reflection question on a deeper level, integrating them with your core values and the person you want to become. Think of your responses as benchmarks for your continued growth and transformation.

The Power of Positive Quitting

What are you committed to quitting?

I recently came across a powerful article on positive quitting – a concept that is too great NOT to share as we wrap up another calendar year!

In her Wanderlust article, Silvia Mordini poses the challenging question that really got my thinking:  “What if we aren’t quitting enough and not the other way around?”

As a recovering over-achiever, this question holds so much power. And I’m guessing you can relate.

How many times have you heard (or even shared) messages like…

YOU CAN DO IT!

WINNERS NEVER QUIT!

(Yes, I read The Little That Could too many times as a child…and I still love this book!)

But when is quitting the best option?

Fellow Coach, Jim Allen shares that “Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not…In reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire.”

Think of something that you have been tolerating that is no longer serving you or your greatest purpose. Maybe it is a friendship that needs to pause…or end. Or a bad habit or a particular situation you keep finding yourself engaging in and know you need to escape for good this time.

Now consider these powerful questions and let yourself dig deep:

  • What would it be like to retire from this bad behavior, toxic relationship, or negative environment?
  • What would you have to let go of?
  • What would shift or change in your life?
  • What would be possible for you then?

To take this a step future, Jim Allen, encourages the creation of a “Personal Quit List.” This is a personal proclamation to identify areas in your life that you need to stop doing so you can create space for something new.

Going Beyond Gratitude

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen many posts and heard comments about what people are thankful for. And I’ve even been doing my own “daily gratitude” tribute (check them out on Instagram).

You may have heard that practicing gratitude has actually been scientifically proven to enhance happiness, improve health, and boost well-being when done consistently. Here are some of the outcomes from practicing gratitude according to Psychologist and gratitude researcher, Dr. Robert Emmons and his team:

While all of these benefits are convincing enough, my own daily practice showed me something even more compelling that made me think of thankfulness in a new way.

Gratitude starts with acknowledgement. And when practiced regularly, it develops authenticity and integrity, ultimately building positive relationships within yourself and others.

Here are three “ah has” that I had this month that helped me go beyond gratitude:

AH HA #1: Being thankful forces you to first be mindful – to understand what has made you who you are, where you are now. Maybe it’s identifying something you’ve overcome or recognizing a person or experience that has made your life better.

AH HA #2: Gratitude also promotes an honest practice of self-awareness that makes us more in touch with our core values and what really is driving our life. It’s impossible to be truly grateful for something that isn’t really in line with how we want to live.

AH HA #3: Strong relationships are built on a solid foundation of gratitude. Dr. Emmons explains why gratitude is good:

“The social benefits are especially significant here because, after all, gratitude is a social emotion. I see it as a relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Take a moment to consider this:

  • How have you activated each of these values recently?
  • Describe the impact on your relationship with yourself and others.
  • What are you most grateful for as a result?

Fast Forward/Slow Motion: Finding The Rhythm of Life

12109178_10105001988481806_3997112178718551173_nAs we welcome a new month and autumn season, transition is in the air! We see it all around us from the changing colors of the trees to setting our clocks back for Daylight Savings. Subtle shifts that nudge us to embrace change.

To some, this changing season holds new possibilities and potential. To others, it feels like there is never “enough” time, money, love, or [fill in your blank here]. It’s all a matter of perspective and choice.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve often felt like I’ve been living life in fast forward and then suddenly in slow motion (but maybe this just comes with being a new parent!). It’s made me think about the pace and dynamic of life and how I’m maintaining a healthy rhythm and flow.

Do you constantly feel like you are rushing from thing to thing, just trying to get “enough” done?

Or maybe each task just blurs into the next, making you feel like your list is never-ending, leaving you with a sense of empty defeat.

Living in fast-forward keeps us so busy that we don’t have time to consider what we want or even question how we’re living. So instead, we just continue working and living at such a break-neck pace just to keep up with everything.

This is not sustainable or healthy, but somehow it’s become acceptable and normal.

 Then there’s the opposite end of the spectrum. When we are living in slow motion, everything seems to stand still around us. This can either be a place of deep introspection and growth, or one that feels stifling.

On one hand, when we choose to slow down enough to listen and turn inward, we begin to notice what we really need. We retire old patterns of belief. We move forward.

But when this slow tempo is something that feels externally imposed by circumstance or another person, it’s a different story altogether. Here, nothing is moving fast enough and we begin to feel held back by our environment or relationships. It’s like an emotional quick sand that slowly sucks us down further and prevents us from making any real progress.

What is the current rhythm of your life? Maybe it feels too fast, too slow, or just right.

One of my favorite authors, Matthew Kelly asks the bold, yet basic, question “what do you want from life?” in his landmark book, The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion & Purpose.

12196097_10105002480675446_105451146905719789_nIn order to begin to answer this question, your life rhythm has to be balanced enough to listen, reflect, and respond.

Kelly goes on to share that “If you don’t know what you want from life, everything will appear either as an obstacle or as a burden.”

Your perspective on this question changes based on your current rhythm and your ability to look honestly at your life. It is during these seasons of transition that I choose to turn inward and quiet my life so I can hear what it’s really trying to tell me.  Note: This is challenging when you’re stuck in fast-forward or feel sucked down in the slow-moving quick sand of circumstance.

What’s Next v. What’s Now

What’s next for you?

You may immediately think of a goal you’re working to accomplish or a big life event, like a new job, milestone birthday, or upcoming vacation. Or maybe you simply just need to throw in another load of laundry and do the dishes!

Over the last several years, this question has been asked and answered countless times in my life. It typically makes me think of a future vision I have for my life, but sometimes can produce a list of what still needs to be done. On one hand, it can it can be energizing and exciting to dream big and work toward our goals. Yet “what’s next” also can feel like tons of pressure and trigger even more stress.

While being future-focused serves a purpose, it also takes us away from being present.

Being fully in the here and now is a skill that many of us struggle with and often lack entirely in our tech-saturated, multi-tasking society where there is always something more to do, see, create, buy, or become.

Consider, how often you are…

Dwelling on what you can’t change

Ruminating over something you are worried about

Forecasting all the negative possibilities of what could happen

IMG_4171As leaders, we have become consumed with meeting and beating deadlines, raising the bottom line, and constantly creating and innovating. We rarely give ourselves Permission to Pause because we are afraid of wasting time or falling behind.

And, in turn, we sacrifice the art of being for the currency of doing.

The Turning Point

Instead of asking and answering “what’s next?” I have another question for you to consider:

What’s NOW for you?

This question becomes a turning point that allows you to return to the present moment and check in with what’s really going on in your life. Here are three simple ways to begin to answer this powerful question and get really present.

Start by take five minutes out of your busy day to be by yourself and quiet your mind and body. Sitting or standing, ground your feet into the floor and close your eyes. Now take ten deep breaths, filling up your belly as you inhale through your nose, and releasing all of your stress as you exhale through your mouth. Roll your shoulders up and back as you continue to breath deeply. Notice where you’re carrying any tension or pain and breath deeper into this part of your body, then let it go.

Once you create some space to be still, use these questions to dive deeper into what you’re experiencing right now:

What have I been too busy to notice?

What is my life craving to tell me?

What do I need to start/stop doing now?

What am I ready to unleash in this season?

Executive Leadership Mentor and author, Wayne Muller, poses the idea of doing the next right thing in his landmark book, A Life Of Being Doing And Having Enough (one of my favorite reads that I highly recommend!).

Muller writes, “We must be willing to listen with the ear of the heart to the timing of things, to let go of any plan or requirement that does not feel in this moment authentically ripe or ready” (pg 61).

This practice of doing the next right thing requires us to be present and aware enough to know what each season of our lives truly needs, and also realize what’s getting in the way.

 I offer these three strategies to make asking and answering “What’s Now For Me?” a familiar practice in your life to maintain a positive focus. And once you’ve answered this question, it then becomes the perfect opportunity to consider “What’s Next?”
